A double shooting in Suitland early Thursday left one person dead, according to police in Prince George’s County, and detectives are trying to determine whether another shooting victim located nearby at about the same time was part of the same altercation. Police said they were called to the 2900 block of Victory Lane at 4:22 a.m. They found two men shot; one was pronounced dead on the scene. The second man was in critical condition on Thursday morning.

I've been in this business for well over 15 years, and it never ceases to amaze me how many fellow officers I see approach vehicles from the driver's side on freeways, and tight roadways. I know that police academy training says approach from the driver's side generally, but I'm here to tell you, that's bs. You need to adapt to the situation and use some basic common sense.



I can remember one distinct situation when I backed up a friend on the freeway who had stopped someone for speeding. I remember sitting there and watching cars flying by him as he talked to the driver from the driver's side. One vehicle in particular came literally within inches of him. After talking to him about it, he shrugged it off like it was no big deal! All it would have taken was that driver to literally turn up their radio, and he could have been toast.

A judge on Friday delayed the scheduled layoffs of more than 150 police officers in New Jersey's largest city for 10 days in a ruling he said was a difficult balancing act between public safety and fiscal responsibility.

Issued in a courtroom overflowing with police officers, state Superior Court Judge Kenneth Levy's decision was a qualified victory for the 167 officers who had faced losing their jobs at 5 p.m. Attorneys for the Fraternal Order of Police had sought a 45-day stay, while the city had sought to have the layoffs begin Friday.

Over six months after 35,844 recruits were selected for the post of constables through the Transparent Recruitment Procedure approved by the Ministry of Home Affairs, the recruits are still awaiting the call for training.



The names of new recruits were announced on May 17.
