Grand Jury doesn't
find enough evidence to find guilty
Here's an interesting police
shooting case. The police officer believed this person had
a gun because another officer the man with a gun while in a car.
From what we can gather, the man got out of the car quickly and
came toward another officer who was "told" he had a gun.
And judging by the video it appears the police officer believed
the man was coming out shooting at him and began firing at him.
Below is more of the story.
A Travis County grand jury declined Wednesday to indict an
Austin police officer who fatally shot a man in an apartment
complex parking lot this year, an incident that renewed
questions about how police use force against minorities.
The decision by the 12-member panel concluded the criminal
investigation into the May 11 shooting of Nathaniel Sanders II,
18, by Senior Officer Leonardo Quintana in the parking lot of
the Walnut Creek Apartments at 6409 Springdale Road in East
Austin.
Sanders' family and some community members expressed
disappointment at the decision.
Minutes after grand jurors adjourned, Travis County District
Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg released much of the evidence the
panel reviewed, including a video from an officer's patrol car
camera that captured portions of the shooting.
The video from officer Alex Hitzelberg, who was serving as
backup for Quintana, contains audio in which Quintana can be
heard alerting fellow officers that Sanders, who had been asleep
in the back of a Mercedes Benz, had a gun.
